Regarding ROI - there are ways to link offers to specific phone numbers, landing pages, codes, etc... but you have to be really disciplined about it. You need to train phone personnel to ask the right questions as to "how they found you" and so forth. That can be tough, though, too. A lot of people are a bit hazy as to whether they clicked on a Facebook ad, an AdWords ad, natural search results or something else that led to you. Analytics can be pretty confusing, too. I agree ROI is a tough nut to crack. Old school keys are split/multi-variate testing and discipline while tracking metrics... building tight controls into the system to see clear through the smoke.

IMHO, social media advertising is a no-brainer for business, but what I have found is that there is one acronym that causes brain freeze whenever the topic of SMA comes up - ROI. "How do we determine ROI?" is usually the first or second questions asked. "How do we do it?" also ranks at the top of responses.

There are a lot of resources out on the net addresses the "How do we do it?" question. Not so much for the "How do we determine ROI?" question.

In my spare time :-), I've been thinking through the ROI stuff. I would love to hear other peoples ideas on the subject.

Follow me @dejon97. I offer tweeting you can believe in. :-)
