Definitely.. another thought - not sure if you've gone down this road yet, buy here's a good post from my site on making social more efficient: http://goo.gl/6SJe

You can manipulate/zoom-in-out on that mind map diagram.

The comments have additional insights.

I saw @steveaverill's post earlier today. I'll check out some of your other blogs about SEO. I love learning about this stuff. Thanks for all these great tips. I've had several people suggest the video route, but I'm just not quite ready to jump into that. I'm sure I'll give in some day. The only video is one done by RAW: Natural Born Artists on YouTube. They interviewed me for a show did with them.

Newport is definitely a great place to sell fine art. I'm sure its the same for the tech world.

Another thought - people that enjoy fine art would probably be interested in your creative process. Video might be a good way to address this and gather more eyeballs/fans.

Amy - you're doing it right. I just took a spin through your site. Fantastic oils, btw. I love em.

There are some other articles on my blog about SEO (a quick search - upper right - will turn them up). Another that I like - about the myths of SEO - is linked here: http://goo.gl/8Jfz.

Generally, the gist is to just keep pumping out content, posting your paintings and descriptions/explanations. Gary Vaynerchuk has lots of good video content that covers how all these things overlap (http://garyvaynerchuk.com/).

More to your point about farming out stuff, though.. fine art is a bit of a different animal. It's tough to imagine a scenario where you have a subcontractor research your topic, then sketch your painting - then you sweep in and put all the creative touches in. That just sounds ugly.

You could, however, use social media to leverage WOM and survey business users or interior designers about what kinds of "lobby trends" they find attractive and other ideas that are developing (like with the lawyers you mention in your post about Turbine/Spearhead). Conversations with "hub influencers" are key.

Finally - you're in Newport! So am I. Maybe you found me via some local link?

I'm not in the copywriting business, but I found this post very valuable. I am a contemporary artist, but I'm building my business with social media and blogging. I've done a lot of research and am spending countless hours learning Search Engine Optimization. I hate to hear all this going on, because I think I may not be able to beat them, so I'm going to have to join them. I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet though. I just don't think anyone can write about my art better than I can, so I can't really farm that stuff out anyway.

I look forward to reading Part II.

Thanks so much. I appreciate your input.

I struggle with this, too. e.g. Should I try to be more to my clients...?... or do they just want me to nail the words and press on to the next project?

Lately, I've set up an arrangement with a designer so I can deliver turnkey success stories (interview, content and layout) for clients/marketing depts who are too busy to juggle the project management and house-side layouts. There's minimal marginal cost to add the layout portion of the project (maybe marginal cost is not the right phrase.. but you get my drift?).

I've found my only option for being competitive is not to pigeonhole myself as a "copywriter" and expand my communications abilities. I maybe am not as strong at strategic marketing plans, but I've found I'm good at community management and business development. I guess getting good at just one thing doesn't cut it anymore and trying to piece together a paycheck from piecemeal paid gigs doesn't pay off in the long run.

Great post man.
